Motorcycle Helmets Designs Continued- Defining Motorcycle Helmet Standards, DOT & SNELL

AMERiders brings you the Continuation of Motorcycle Helmets Designs and the Super-Specialized Reasoning Behind Them, with Defining Motorcycle Helmet Standards and an explanation of DOT & SNELL certifications. Let’s go back over a bit of what we said in our last post and then continue on.

The Difference between the two helmets

Between the two helmets, besides the cool Motorcycle helmet designs and sweet race car helmet designs are other things as well. It’s more than just what happens when you bonk your head, it’s also about fire protection. Racing helmets have fire protection, not all full-face helmets that you see are racing helmets. Ameriders has both Racing and full-faced helmets in stock. The Auto helmets’ fire-resistant Nomex liner is not existent in motorcycle helmets because a rider leaves the bike conscious or not.

However, getting out of a racecar is totally different in a crash. The safety system is designed to protect the driver from harm. A caged race car driver takes an extra 15 seconds longer to get out of the car than it does to fly off of a motorcycle. That is 15 seconds of fire protection that could save the drivers life that a motorcycle driver doesn’t have I call that a win.

DOT
DOT approved Sticker

Department of Transportation or DOT Is a US government approved standard which is the most popular helmet type in the country for most everyone except for race car drivers. DOT helmets differ from Snell as they are more shock absorbent and designed at protecting your skull from 90% of impact types. The maximum g-force allowed by the DOT test is 250g’s, and an impact of 200-250g’s to your head would cause a survivable, yet harsh brain injury. These helmets also are favorite shock absorbency because of recent studies claiming that absorbing the force of an impact could be more important than resisting it.

Snell
Defining Motorcycle Helmet Standards
SNELL approved Sticker

The Snell Memorial Foundation is an independent organization established in 1957, named after race car driver William “Pete” Snell who tragically died in 1956 when his helmet failed to protect his head during an accident. Ed Becker is Snell’s executive director has stated, “There are many more motorcyclists than racing drivers, so manufacturers can justify the expensive tooling to produce cheaper polycarbonate shell motorcycle helmets. Race Car helmets are Kevlar or fiberglass because although they’re more labor-intensive to make, the tooling is cheaper. Carbon fiber is top-of-the-line for both Race Car and motorcycle helmets, but it’s years away from trickling down the price range.”

Let’s Continue

Defining Motorcycle Helmet Standards is difficult so DOT and SNELL have different ways of doing things, and as we said in our last post Motorcycle Helmets do trump Race Car Helmets in visibility as they have at least a 210-degree lateral vision to a race car helmet 180 degrees. As Motorcycle riders crouch, sit upright, look both ways and look back, so needing a bigger visor is important so they can see in all positions. When strapped into a Race car’s racing seat and its harness, you’ll be thrilled to have side view mirrors as you can hardly move your head. You can only turn it a few degrees in any direction, so the extra visor space would be a real waste.

“The ‘low-velocity’ tests came about because of concern at FIA and elsewhere that helmets built to withstand very severe impacts might also transmit high levels of shock in less serious impacts,” says Becker. “So we were urged to include some low-velocity impact tests.” (The FIA is an International Motorsports Governing Body).

New Testing

Snell updates its rules regularly and they are due some new ones so there is some new testing to go along with this as well. Testing diversified as we said to go along with this. They added new tests to go along with their current ones such as the “Low Velocity” impact testing, and “Low Lateral” impacts at the intersection of the head forms reference and the transverse planes.

These tests will help as head injuries can also happen at lower speeds. The new test puts helmets through multiple impacts at a lower rate of speed. Also, There was (also) concern that head strikes against lateral edges might fall below the protective zones of the helmets (ear zone). In fact, though, results to date indicate that this is not a real issue either, this is one way they help with Defining Motorcycle Helmet Standards

What are the tests?

You might wonder exactly what tests Both DOT and SNELL do well we did a bit of digging and found out for you.

DOT Helmet Certification
Defining Motorcycle Helmet Standards
DOT helmet certification

In order for a motorcycle helmet to be DOT certified, it must conform to a few minimum requirements, and be able to pass a series of impact tests.

The impact tests are administered by placing a head form (basically a dummy head equipped with measuring instruments) inside it to measure speed and g-forces as the helmet is dropped onto different surfaces from a pre-determined height. Based on the energy that gets transmitted to the head, the helmet is given a grade of pass or fail. Tests are done twice, to make sure the helmet can withstand multiple impacts in one crash.

Other tests are also done, such as a penetration test to make sure the head isn’t impacted, and the retention system is also tested to make sure the helmet doesn’t slide off in an accident.

DOT Helmet Tests

  • Helmet is dropped onto a spherical anvil from a height of 1.83m
  • Helmet is dropped onto a flat anvil from a height of 1.83m
  • Pointed striker is dropped onto helmet
  • Weight is applied to retention system (up to 300 pounds of force for 120 seconds)

The DOT standard is sometimes criticized because it works on the honor system; manufacturers declare a helmet to conform to DOT standards themselves and label it accordingly. Only when the helmet is tested might it lose its certification, and it might already be on the market when it does. However, the penalties for building a failing helmet are very high – up to $5000 per helmet – so there is a strong incentive for manufacturers to do their own testing before helmets are released, which they typically do.

SNELL Helmet Tests

Defining Motorcycle Helmet Standards
SNELL helmet certification

Snell issues a new certification standard every 5 years. Snell’s helmet testing is similar to DOT testing, but with additional requirements. They are (including what we have stated above):

  • Snell uses 5 different shaped anvils instead of two
  • Helmets are dropped from multiple heights (all of which are higher than DOTs)
  • Snell tests the chin bar along with the dome of the helmet
  • The visor is also tested, by shooting it with three lead pellets from an air rifle.
How Much Does Certification Matter In The Real World?

Testing in Defining Motorcycle Helmet Standards is valuable, no doubt. However, for the sake of fairness, lab tests take place in a controlled environment and are very consistent and precise as accidents in the real world are chaotic and unpredictable.

So a given helmet could perform exceptionally well in lab tests, however, but fall behind others in a real world, post-crash damage assessment. The reverse could also be true; helmets with a great reputation among riders could be outperformed by others in the testing environment, especially if helmet manufacturers make a point of building to the standard.

In Closing- Which standard should I choose.

This is actually a much debated and even a hotly debated question.

In the U.S., you should go with a helmet that is, at a minimum, DOT approved which ensures your helmet is street legal. You’ll not only have a significant level of protection, but your helmet won’t attract any unwanted attention from the law (which you probably get enough of already!)

While we at AMERiders can’t tell you definitively which one you should go with, we can tell you about what goes into each and to discuss the pros and cons of all of them, so you can make your own decision about which one is best for you.

Remember, no matter what kind of helmet you buy, wearing one is infinitely better than not, if a fall happens on a ride. We urge you to always wear a helmet every time you throw a leg over a bike!

Motorcycle Helmets Designs and the Super-Specialized Reasoning Behind Them.

Ameriders wants to ensure your noggin is safe, which is why we are bringing you Motorcycle Helmets Designs and the Super-Specialized Reasoning Behind Them, as well as many DOT and SNELL helmets in our store.

THE HUMAN HEAD

The head has been smacked, slashed, smacked, cracked, set on fire and well whipped around like Skip-It and still survived. Our beloved motorcycles bounce our skulls off pavement without the slightest consideration for riders who think they that their heads will hold up to a fall. Racecars are unforgiving as well, as they will use your head as a pinball with the steel roll cage and harness as the paddles.

Helmets Evolution
Motorcycle Helmet Designs
Evolution of the Helmet

Both helmets have evolved over the years since they were just leather caps. There only purpose was to help keep your ears intact as the wind rushed past while riding, or racing. They have also been diverging, becoming ever dedicated, and increasingly in their tasks. Their shells and visors to both motorcycle and auto racing helmets are similarly in two very specialized ways to armor up. This would be Snell Certifications and DOT -Department of Transportation Certification.

Certifications

Snell Memorial Foundation, who is the voice of authority in all this is and is a nonprofit group of engineers, scientists, and physicians, who created a new safety standard for auto racing and motorcycle helmets every five years. Fresh rules are due out this year.

Motorcycle Helmet Designs
What some Snell/DOT approved Helmets look like

Snell handles both Motorcycle and Racecar Helmets, very few motorcycle or racecar helmets are just one or the other most are both. Snell Certifications are voluntary by the manufacturer and most North American Racing Series require Snell Rated as well as Full-faced Motorcycle helmets. Motorcycle helmets that are usually both don’t sell as well unless they are full all-over Motorcycle Helmet Designs that draw the riders attention to buy it.

Here is what Ed Becker, Snell’s executive director had to say about impact protection of the two helmets. “I doubt whether there’s any real difference in impact protection between Snell M2015 [for motorcycles] and SA2015 [for cars] helmets.” Either way, a motorcycle helmet is not safe to race and a racing helmet is not safe to ride in.

The Difference between the two helmets

Between the two helmets besides the cool Motorcycle helmet designs and sweet racecar helmet designs are other things as well. Riding a snowmobile instead of the bike this winter? Check this out!

Winter will be fast approaching since fall has now arrived. Which means either winterizing your bike and/or grabbing winter gear. For those of you who will be winterizing your bike for storage, we will cover some tips for you in another post. For those of you Riding a snowmobile to have some fun instead of riding your bike through the freezing cold, we at AMERiders have plenty of gear for you and a tip on how to cook with your snowmobile. So don’t worry about cold sandwiches and energy bars while your out fire up a hot meal with these tips.

No stove in site, use your sled to cook your hot meal
Riding a snowmobile
Let your buddies have their cold food, crack open your warm meal.

After hours of riding in the cold, a frozen sandwich or energy bar just doesn’t hit the spot when you’re hungry. However, there is a solution to your hunger problems! When you’re calf deep or more in the snow in the backcountry with no stove in site. Your sled can now double as your stove. We even had our doubts about this type of cooking by thinking of cancer, exhaust fumes, partially cooked meat. Food can be cooked on your sled, and you won’t taste the exhaust fumes.

Snowmobile cooking has already been established as a great way to eat a hot meal without having to lug around a stove or build a campfire. Some smart person already figured this out for us a few years back, and we applaud him for it. No more waiting or attracting bears, just to fill your empty stomach, just ride, wait, and eat.

Really my snowmobile for a hearty warm meal?
Riding a snowmobile
Your snowmobile can provide a hearty warm meal.

When done right, you can make some pretty decent meals. Even when it’s done wrong, your food will still be warm. That is still by far much better than the frozen sandwich or that tasteless granola bar that you don’t really want to eat.

Creativity and patience can help you can turn that sweet sled into your own personal mobile kitchen. Let your buddies eat their frozen tasteless foods, while you crack open that engine and pull out a warm dish that’s been slow roasting, and reward yourself for your ingenuity.

What to cook and how to do it.
Riding a snowmobile
The Muffpot a great way to cook a warm meal.

First, you need to plan on a dish to cook and how long your ride may be. The Next thing you should decide on is how to prevent your food from being exposed to engine fumes. There are many solutions to this problem. Specially designed products such as the Muffpot are a great way to cook your food in an enclosed space that will keep your food from tasting like gasoline.

If you don’t have one of these items then wrapping your food securely in aluminum foil or placing your food in a sealed empty soup can to keep any fumes from reaching your food. Cooking hot dogs, burritos, scrambled eggs or beans are just a few items that can be cooked while riding a snowmobile. AMERiders has gathered some recipes for you, to help turn you into a chef for your buddies while riding a snowmobile through the snow.

List of dishes to cook while Riding a snowmobile: Not a complete list.
Riding a snowmobile
Hot dogs are a great warm dish.
1: The Dog:

The classic hot dog is a great warm dish. However, take that normal dog and pimp it out in various ways (onions, peppers, marinade). Cooking a hot dog in awesome chicken stock with some spices and vegetables will only make that dog taste better. This is great for short trips.

Riding a snowmobile
The bird is another great dish to cook.
2: The Bird:

If you’re going on a long ride, then take your favorite uncooked poultry, season it with your favorite herbs and spices. Wrap that baby up with aluminum foil, and place it near the muffler without clogging up the engine. To get an even cook, try throwing that bird in the Muffpot. Make sure you bring some wet-naps.

Riding a snowmobile
Little sliders make great food for a chilly day
3:The Burger:

Burgers are a staple American food served almost everywhere in the world, so why not in the back-country? Unless you’ve got a mini grill attached to your engine, making the perfect burger might not be so easy. Attach this special burger griller to your exhaust and cook the perfect patty every time… just make sure you bring all the fixings.

Riding a snowmobile
Cook a small pork roast and throw in some veggies
4: The Pig:

Cooking slow is basically the same thing as braising. If you’re a top chef at snowmobile cooking, try braising a pork tenderloin. Get the perfect sized tenderloin, marinate it in some barbecue sauce, wrap it up in foil and throw it near the muffler for a long ride. Careful on where you throw the pig, too close to the muffler and you might overcook one side.

Riding a snowmobile
Reheat any of your leftovers from previous meals
5: The Leftovers:

Someone already did all the hard work of cooking that delicious food; all you have to do is reheat it. The snowmobile method of cooking is a great way to reheat yesterday’s steak, burrito or anything else that might fit securely near the exhaust for quick trips. We think this is the best option to experiment with until you figure out how hot your sled runs and how fast the food cooks, before trying to cook with raw meat.

The long and short of it.

Let your creativity help you eat well while in the backcountry. It is easy to cook food with your sled with all that useful energy radiating from the muffler. With hot tasty food, you’ll be the envy of all your buddies. But don’t forget you need to ensure you’re wearing the proper gear while Riding a snowmobile as well. And we have Helmets, Gloves, and all-weather headwear that can help, as well as some great eyewear.

And as always….

Which Gear Colors Work Best for Visibility to Other Drivers

Ensuring safety each and every time you ride is important especially at this time during the year when motorcyclists are just starting to get back out on the road and ride. It is a question that many riders ask “Which Gear Colors Work Best for Visibility to Other Drivers” well, we are here to help answer that question. The obvious Best Gear Colors answer is bright colors which is true, however, there is more to it than that.

Best Gear Colors
Men’s Green And Black Mesh And Nylon Motorcycle Jacket

Each and every day many motorcyclists are injured on the road because drivers say “I didn’t see them” is it their fault or is it the riders fault? How could it have been prevented? In many ways, the driver could have looked and paid more attention to his/her surroundings and the rider could wear some of the Best Gear Colors that would make them more visible to other drivers during all times of the day.

Best Gear Colors
HJC SY-MAX III MODULAR HI-VIZ TOURING HELMET

Wearing Reflective or fluorescent clothing will lower your risk for crashes as you are more visible than you would be wearing darker colors. A study shows however that most riders wear either black, blue, or brown clothing on the upper body and black or blue clothing on their lower body. Even if you wear darker colors adding a reflective stripe or piping to them can raise your possibility of being seen.

Main reported helmet colors that are mostly used are black, white, and red. In comparison, there is a lower risk of a crash happening when wearing a white helmet versus a black helmet. Similar associations have been found with orange and yellow versus red. If you really want to be noticed don an HI-VIZ helmet like the one shown here. Plus adding reflective tape to your current favorite helmet will also help.

Using reflective piping on various pieces of gear will help as well like these cool looking Motorcycle Sissy Bar Bag Trunk With Skull the reflective skull will definitely get you noticed by other drivers, and it is made from PVC material which means it is waterproof helping you to be seen in the rain as well.

Best Gear Colors
MOTORCYCLE SISSY BAR BAG TRUNK WITH SKULL

Something else that can also help is if you use headlight every time you get on your bike not just at dark or. at twilight, it will help you be seen more often. Research has shown that consistently using your headlights during the day can decrease the risk of an accident by making you more visible to passing drivers. Headlights increase the odds of a driver not only noticing a motorcycle but seeing them as well. To a motorcycle rider seeing and noticing are two different things. When both happen then the risk of collision is lowered.

“A 2004 study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that use of headlights led to a 23 percent reduction in opposite direction crashes involving motorcyclists, as opposed to a 5 percent drop for those in passenger vehicles. Experts say that oncoming motorists are able to detect a headlight long before they can make out the motorcycle or its rider. The headlight provides an extra bit of warning, something that might be the difference between a dangerous accident and a safe journey home.”

So to sum up some of the Best Gear Colors to wear are White, HI-Viz yellow, orange, any fluorescent colors, and reflective striping and piping on your gear, and yes ladies even pink will work! There is more of a risk for a crash when not wearing fluorescent or reflective clothing,a non-white helmet, or even not using headlights during the day. So wear what will get you seen and use your headlights. You don’t have to look like a crossing guard or a safety worker to get noticed while riding but being safe is important.

April Is Check your Helmet Month! Get Your Lid Checked!

Most Motorcyclists start riding again in April it begins their “riding season”, cool but not cold air and the sun on your face. It is a great time to ride. So why not go ahead and check your lid to ensure it is properly protecting you, which is why April Is Check your Helmet Month! A good helmet is a vital piece of protective wear and, we at AMERiders support wearing a helmet for safety.Check Your Helmet Month

Since riding season is ramping up for all us bikers, it is a good idea during this April’s Check your Helmet Month, to remember these basic tips to ensure your helmet is doing or going to do its job:

  1. FIT IS VITAL
A well-fitting helmet should rest one inch above your eyebrows and shouldn’t roll forward or sideways on your head. To ensure a comfortable fit that doesn’t squeeze too tightly, wear a helmet for 15 minutes before making a final buying decision.Check Your Helmet Month

  2. HELMETS DON’T LAST FOREVER
Over time, exposure to UV rays and the aging of adhesives and components will damage a helmet’s protective qualities. That’s why manufacturers and the SNELL Foundation recommend that helmets be replaced every three to five years, depending on use. Every new Harley-Davidson helmet comes with a “purchased on date” sticker that can be placed under the comfort liner for a quick reference.

  3. KEEP IT CLEAN
A clean and well-cared-for helmet will protect better and longer. Use a mild soap to wash the outer shell and internal liners. Never use solvents or chemicals for cleaning as they can destroy protective coatings.http://www.harley-davidson.com/content/h-d/en_US/dealer-locator.html?hideHDNav=yes

  4. ONE DROP AND IT’S DONE
A helmet is designed for only one impact. Even a small impact may fracture the outer shell or compress the impact-absorbing liner despite no visible damage. If a helmet has been dropped or suffers an impact, it should be immediately replaced.

So get out there and get your lid checked during this April’s Check Your Helmet Month, whether it be yours, or the families make sure they are checked, and if you need a new one AMERiders.com has large selection of DOT and Snell helmets to help keep your lid intact.

Let AMERiders replace your lid if needed during. Check your Helmet Month
