Which Bobber is Best? Harley-Davidson, Indian or Triumph.

AMERIders loves to have discussions with its readers and today we bring into question another fun discussion Which Bobber is Best? Harley-Davidson, Indian or Triumph? What is your favorite? As a blog manager, and writer I have a pretty awesome job. It’s not always great – no job is – but this particular gig counters the not-great stuff with the fact I get to ride motorcycles, go on motorcycle rides, get the scoop on new motorcycles and write about all things motorcycles which I love. And over the past year, there have been three motorcycles I’ve talked with people about that, and that they have said they have loved riding the most. And they have been the various interpretations on the bobber theme. These have been presented by Harley-Davidson, Indian, and Triumph: the Street Bob, Scout Bobber, and Bonneville Bobber.

Of course, the obvious question I had to ask was: Which interpretation is best?

All three brands have unveiled new or updated bobber in past year

I realize there are some members of the old school who will argue that none of these bikes are “true” bobbers by the very nature of their being production models, but let’s just put that argument to the side for now. Definitions change. It seems the current definition of a bobber is an aesthetically stripped-down cruiser with mid-set pegs and a solo seat. Even that definition is a loose one (pegs on the Scout Bobber are a little far forward to be called mid-set), so it’s no surprise that each of the brands has offered up a uniquely different take.

Another important aspect of a bobber, it seems, and one that is no less difficult to define is the concept of heritage. Bobbers are bikes that aesthetically harken back to a different time – ostensibly the post-WWII era when returning servicemen stripped their bikes of all unnecessary weight for the sake of going faster. Each of the three brands trade heavily on a heritage that stretches back more than a century; Indian traces its roots to 1901, Triumph to 1902, and Harley-Davidson to 1903. Harley is the only member of the group that can claim to have actually been manufacturing motorcycles the whole time, but all three can legitimately claim to have been part of the original bobber movement. (I will write about Bikes in the Military in the coming weeks)

Before we get to the question of which has delivered the better modern interpretation, however, let’s remind ourselves of what we’re dealing with:

Harley-Davidson Street Bob

READ MORE: 2018 Harley-Davidson Street Bob

Price: US $14,499
Numbers: 1753cc V-twin / 74 hp* / 110 ft-lb of torqueBobber

First introduced in 2006 as a Dyna, the Street Bob was reborn in late 2017 as part of Harley’s complete overhaul of the cruiser lineup( we will get you a good look at the new line up next week) – Dynas were scrapped and Softails completely changed. Equipped with an all-new engine, chassis, and suspension, the new Street Bob is markedly better than previous iterations. As seen in many reviews I read,  “The Street Bob has managed to keep most of the elements that are loved about the previous model while eliminating or alleviating the stuff that was not liked.”

As a Harley, it is, by default, the standard by which all other bobbers are measured. High-quality fit and finish, a fun engine, and fantastic looks mean that standard is not an easy one to meet.

*Harley, of course, does not publish horsepower figures. This number comes from a recent Cycle World test of the 2018 Fat Bob, which is powered by the same engine.

Indian Scout Bobber

READ MORE: 2018 Indian Scout Bobber

Price: US $11,499
Numbers: 1133cc V-twin / 100 hp** / 72 ft-lb of torque

bobber

Unveiled in summer 2017, the Scout Bobber makes use of the same chassis and liquid-cooled engine as the standard Scout, which was first introduced back in 2014. Different tires and riding position, however, manage to deliver a unique riding experience – one that feels better suited to making the most of the heralded powerplant. As seen in many reviews I read: “It’s far and away the best cruiser engine they’ve ever experienced… but would be equally delighted to see it housed in anything from a naked to an adventure bike.”

Quite possibly the best example to date in terms of what Indian is capable of, the Scout Bobber’s fit and finish shows a tremendous amount of attention to detail. It’s clear that parent company Polaris cares deeply about the brand and is eager to see it thrive.

**This is the claim made by Indian’s US website; its UK website claims 94 hp.

Triumph Bonneville Bobber

READ MORE: 2017 Triumph Bonneville Bobber

Price: US $11,900
Numbers: 1200cc parallel twin / 75 hp / 78 ft-lb of torque

bobber

Triumph’s artful take on the bobber was introduced to the world via a lavish and loud warehouse party almost a year ago, but the bike didn’t really start arriving at dealerships until the start of this year. Unique to the trio in its use of a liquid-cooled parallel twin engine, the Bonneville Bobber offers a somewhat sportier take on the bobber concept – thanks in part to a lean angle more generous than that found on the other two.

Aesthetically, the bike is a… ahem… triumph, demonstrating a level of fit and finish that would have been unimaginable from the British manufacturer even five years ago. Similar to the Indian, it is littered with tiny branded touches that show dedication and care. More recently, Triumph has introduced the Bonneville Bobber Black – a blacked-out version of the Bonneville Bobber that comes with dual front discs and adds cruise control to the list of standard items. For the purpose of this discussion, though, let’s keep our focus on the standard Bonneville Bobber.

So, Which One is Best?

Before I start these next few sentences this is not my personal opinion I don’t ever try to put that into my articles for you, if it is my personal opinion I will tell you guys and gals up front. Now with that out of the way lets get on with it.

The Triumph Bonneville Bobber easily takes the prize when it comes technology and comfort. It is packed with standard goodies like ABS, traction control, riding modes, and “torque-assist clutch” (aka slipper clutch). The only one of these you’ll find on the Harley or Indian is ABS, and in the United States that feature is an extra that will cost more. Meanwhile, the seating position on the Triumph is adjustable, which means you automatically have a better shot at being comfortable.bobber

Even in its more aggressive stance, some prefer the Triumph for frames like over 6ft. The Harley has an odd riding position that is ultimately fun but takes some getting used to, whereas the Indian’s stock rider triangle is pretty challenging for a gangly fella.

The biggest strike against the Triumph is the fact it relies on chain final drive. The other two are belt-driven, which makes life a lot easier. Cleaning and lubing the Triumph’s chain will require a paddock stand at the very least, and adjusting chain tension is the sort of pain-in-the-ass task that, I’m certain, is at the heart of most people’s decision to buy shaft-driven bikes. Additionally, the Bonneville Bobber’s 9-liter tank (2.3 US gallons) is the tiniest of the bunch (12.5 liters for the Indian; 13.2 liters for the Harley).

The Indian scores the W when it comes to starting price, but that’s a false savings since ABS costs extra (if you want ABS, the Triumph is least expensive). I’ll also give the nod to the Indian when it comes to aesthetics. Just barely. And that’s obviously a matter of personal taste, which could be influenced by your personal bias toward a motorcycle brand. I have a special place in my heart for a certain brand myself, so it should come as no surprise that in a contest between three beautiful machines I’m going to choose the one with “Harley” written on the tank. Truthfully, you can’t go wrong with any of them.

bobber

In terms of engine, the Indian wins as the Scout Bobber’s 1133cc powerplant give you the best elements of the other two contenders – the sportiness of the Triumph and the visceral meanness of the Harley – with the benefit of considerably more horsepower. The ability to tear away in a generally un-cruiser-like manner will put the spirit of hooliganism in you. As such, although the Indian lacks the Triumph’s capacity to lean it feels better suited to zipping through traffic; a particularly low center of gravity aids this.

The biggest drawback of the Scout Bobber is that it does feel quite tiny if you’re 6 feet 1 inch tall; its seat is particularly low to the ground and the riding position scrunches you up. Not as much as on the Harley, but enough to make you feel small. Which is a strange way to feel on a 255kg bike that’s 2.2 meters long. The feeling is alleviated somewhat by the addition of mini ape-hanger handlebars, which allow you to sit more upright and give you a greater sense of commanding the bike.

Lastly, where the Harley really manages to beat the other two is in presence and, possibly, gravitas. With its enormous Milwaukee Eight V-twin rumbling between your knees, the Street Bob feels the most substantial. The Harley’s riding position is by far the most squished but you don’t notice as much because the bike is bigger, and it feels that way: not huge, nor oversized, but of decent bulk.

Aesthetically, whereas the Indian and Triumph are steeped in ornate touches, the Harley sticks a little more to the bare-bones spirit of a bobber. Everything is done very, very well, but the Street Bob looks a little more rough and ready, a little more willing to be caked in mud, and a little more likely to look cool with rust. (am I, right? oops sorry is that my opinion sticking in there?)

Additionally, you simply have to acknowledge the strength of the Harley-Davidson name. It means something. People who don’t ride know what a Harley is; that isn’t necessarily the case for a Triumph or an Indian. Harleys are the only bikes I’ve ever ridden that have inspired people to salute as I’ve ridden past. For some riders, the Harley name has value greater than any other.

Harley’s biggest weakness is the fact it weighs 42 kg (93 lbs) more than the Indian or Triumph. The weight is low, so you don’t notice… until you jam on the brakes. All three bobbers run with a single disc up front and a single disc in the rear. It feels like enough (barely) on the lighter bikes, but on the Harley you definitely notice.

Ultimately, the answer to the question of which of these three bobbers is the best really depends on the person who’s ponying up the dough to buy it. It’s an individual decision. Does the bike fit your tastes, your riding style, etc? But, of course, that’s a cop-out answer; let’s choose a winner, dammit.

bobber

If you were to put a gun to my head, after a long period of back and forth I’d probably (and perhaps unsurprisingly, considering my bias) choose the Harley.

It’s the engine that does it for me. The Harley feels more substantial and has the insane amount of “Wheeee!” that the I love.Don’t get me wrong I have been on some of the other and they ride well. But it’s the rumble of an H-D that does it for me. Others will say it different but again that is only with a gun to my head. there is no clear winner here unless you yourself choose one.

We will be getting you the information on all the new lines ups for each of these heavy hitters in the next few weeks. So keep Reading.

Did You Know How Harley-Davidson Bikes Became Known As “Hogs”?

Did You Know How Harley-Davidson Bikes Became Known As “Hogs”? AMERiders gives you the backstory and the answer to this question. For nearly 100 years, Harley-Davidson motorcycles have been referred to as “hogs.”  Although you may assume that this nickname has something to do with the size or sound of their motorcycles (or perhaps the size or sound of their riders), the true origins of the nickname are rooted in racing.

Background of Racing

Harley-Davidson fielded its first factory race team in 1914 at the Dodge City 300.  Although they were not victorious in their inaugural race, losing to archrival Indian, the five-man team came back to win at Dodge City in 1915 and 1916. In the years leading up to World War I, Harley riders dominated the sport of motorcycle racing, racking up first-place finishes across the United States earning the team the nickname “The Wrecking Crew.” (Which, ironically, is the same nickname that a group of Indian riders would pick up a few decades later)

hogs

All racing was postponed during WWI, with much of the motorcycle production going to military contracts, but once the war was over it was back to the track for the Wrecking Crew. They continued to come out on top, taking the checkered flag at board tracks and dirt tracks throughout the early 1920s. It was during this time that race team member Ray Weishaar acquired a pet piglet, which was quickly adopted as the team’s mascot. A tradition soon began of riding a victory lap after each win with the pig, whose name was Johnny, sitting on the gas tank of the winning race bike.

hogs

Thus the Knickname “Hogs” was born

This practice led to various journalists calling the racers “the Harley Hogs” as well as remarks that Harley was “hogging” all the victories from Indian and Excelsior. Eventually, the term “hog” became synonymous with any Harley-Davidson motorcycle. As the years went by, the company embraced the moniker and now “HOG” is used as an acronym for the Harley Owners Group as well as the Harley-Davidson Motor Company’s listing on the stock market. Harley’s marketing and art departments have also done their part to perpetuate the “hog” nickname, producing various ad campaigns and merchandise that feature images of hogs. The current artistic rendition of the hog looks nothing like old Johnny, but I guess no one would want to buy a motorcycle named after a cute little piglet.

Moment of Silence for H-D’s Dyna. and Birth of 2018 Softail Cruiser Line

AMERiders likes to keep you up-to-date on current motorcycle news whether it be apparel, gear or Motorcycles themselves so here’s some news on H-D’s new 2018 Softail Cruiser Line. But first, let’s have a moment of silence for the H-D Dyna. The “rubber soul” of the Dyna line and its elastomer engine mounts are gone in as the new 2018 Softail-only cruiser line emerges.

It’s true

softailIt may be hard for Dyna traditionalists to take “Softail” and “Low Rider” in the same model name, but that’s just what’s happened for 2018. It’s may be a big departure to drop the Dyna from the Harley-Davidson cruiser line up, the qualities that made the Low Rider a popular choice remain: It is still considered a blank canvas for customization. It also keeps the individualistic DNA of the 1970s chopper era that birthed the original Low Rider.

As with the rest of the new 2018 Softail model lineup, the Low Rider features a new version of the four-valve-per-cylinder Milwaukee-Eight 107ci V-twin with dual counterbalancers to cancel primary vibration. This allows the engine to be rigidly mounted in the frame, which increases chassis stiffness for improved handling. Harley-Davidson claims the 107ci Milwaukee-Eight makes the new bikes 10 percent faster from 0-60 than the High Output Twin Cam 103 engine used previously.

New Lighter Frame

A lighter, stiffer (compared to previous Softail and Dyna models) that takes the idea of form and function to a place that it’s never gone before. It’s the look of a hard tail from a bygone era that delivers a thoroughly modern ride. The mild-steel tubular frame has also been redesigned and is 65 percent stiffer than the outgoing Softail frame. This new frame has 50 percent fewer component parts, 22 percent fewer welds and, with the solid-mount engine, makes for an overall 34 percent more rigid chassis. This new frame (along with other changes) help reduce the weight of the Heritage Classic by 32 pounds for 2018. The new chassis also improves steering and increases available lean angle.

High-Performance Front Suspension and Rear Mono Shock

softailThe New Showa Dual Bending Valve (SDBV) fork Harley-Davidson introduced to much praise on the FL touring line last year is now applied to 2018 Softail motorcycles. The Showa fork reduces weight and provides linear damping characteristics to provide a more comfortable, better controlled ride and improved handling. At the rear, dropping the twin shocks is a big departure. But the new single under-seat coil-over unit improves performance by offering increased wheel travel, more controlled damping and a larger range of spring preload adjustment.

softailAt the rear, dropping the twin shocks is a big departure. But the new single under-seat coil-over unit improves performance by offering increased wheel travel, more controlled damping and a larger range of spring preload adjustment. It’s easily adjustable allowing for dynamic cornering capability, quicker acceleration, and braking while preserving the hardtail look.

Beauty in Throwback Style

Throwback style through dual tank mounted gauges, headlight visor and 70’s inspired tank graphics help to carry forward the traditional Low Rider cues. Not only that it is chromed out from headlight visor to exhaust and it has some beautiful bold aluminum wheels that stay true to the modern classic look.

The New 2017 Harley- Davidson Iron 883
Iron 883
Harley Davidson Iron 883

The new Harley-Davidson Iron 883 is a gorgeous bike as you can see from the pictures, but as H-D says its “Aggressive throwback styling taken to a place altogether new. No need to shine this machine. Just get on and tear up the nearest street.”  They have gone and really done it with this motorcycle especially for those that like the “Dark Arts” look.

H-D also said this about the Iron 883 “You’re looking at a pioneer of raw, blacked-out, stripped-down custom style. In the years since its introduction, it has only gotten better. Fine-tuned suspension. Tuck and roll seat. Black cast aluminum wheels with machined highlights. And blacked-out surfaces from fender to fender. You get everything you need. And nothing you don’t.”

As with the other 2017 line that gave you more of what you wanted.

Harley motorcycle riders have felt the pull to amp up their powertrain performance since the beginning. Greater acceleration as well as increased passing power, or just more of that rip-roaring, raw Harley-Davidson exhaust sound.

A performance engine build can be intimidating, but you don’t have to start from scratch. A factory-engineered Screamin’ Eagle® Stage upgrade is the place to start with complete, street compliant performance configurations for the increased torque and horsepower you are looking for.

This Ride has a powerful 1200CC engine and more

In 1948 the world got it’s first glimpse of this iconic 2.1-gallon gas tank. However, the world has never seen it sitting atop anything quite like this. The 2017 Sportster Forty-Eight has been designed with its signature bulldog stance and the powerful 1200cc Evolution engine. Furthermore, it has large 49mm front forks, an adjustable rear suspension, cast aluminum wheels with floating rotors as well as powerful brakes. All this brings plenty of handling and comfort to all this beauty’s heavy-hitting style.

Handling
2017 Sportster Forty-Eight
Handling is tight and right

The street is the home turf of the Sportster motorcycle, and a narrow, agile frame wrapped around a strong V-Twin engine has always been its calling card. To see how far Harley has taken this basic equation, get in the saddle of any 2017 Sportster Forty-Eight. The list of constant innovations and refinements you experience on the Sportster motorcycle of today is more than you want to read about here. The latest innovation includes suspension on every model, with cartridge emulsion rear shocks and a screw adjuster to further dial in the handling. It all feels tight and right, bringing confidence to the ride and a grin to the rider. Whether you’re rocketing to the next stoplight, threading through the urban grid, or busting out of the city limits to parts unknown.

Comfort
2017 Sportster Forty-Eight
Low Seat with Minimalist Styling

When one thinks of the raw-boned style of a Sportster motorcycle they may not immediately think of comfort. That would be a mistake, especially with the 2017 Sportster Forty-Eight. Sink into the seat of any 2017 Sportster model and you discover a premium ride hidden under all the lean and mean styling. The engine is rubber-mounted to the frame, so you feel all the power of an Evolution V-Twin but none of the vibrations. Read more about it and other key features here

Ben McGinley Harley-Davidson Designer/Stylist

Ben McGinley joined Harley-Davidson® five years ago and has been banging out brilliance ever since. A lifelong gearhead, he goes straight to the heart of the machine to turn a sketch on paper to real iron and steel. Inspired by the renaissance of custom bike building, and from events like Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show, Rockerbox Motofest, and Brewtown Rumble, Ben focuses on the real honesty and authenticity of materials to find what’s cool about the bikes and bring it forward.

For Ben, the Forty-Eight® motorcycle has always been the epitome of Harley-Davidson minimalism. “It really goes back to simplicity and honesty. Two wheels and a V-Twin right in the center.” It’s about design, not decoration. Stripped back pure and, as always, without compromise.

2017 Harley-Davidson Street 750 Just Rolled In, This is one sweet bike.

Have a gander at the new 2017 Harley-Davidson Street 750, they just rolled in and from what we at AMERiders, have seen it is one sweet bike! Beneath the Dark Custom™ motorcycle lurks a liquid-cooled 750cc Revolution X™ V-Twin engine, but that isn’t all they have given a bunch of tweaks to the street 750.

Beating Traffic has Never been Easier.
Harley-Davidson Street 750
The Harley-Davidson® Street® 750 was built specifically to shred the city streets.

You’ve ridden the wide-open country and endless miles of highway. Now carve the canyons into the urban grid. From the liquid-cooled Revolution X® engine and confidence-inspiring optional ABS brakes to the nimble chassis and dialed-in suspension. The Harley-Davidson® Street® 750 was built specifically to shred the city streets. On the 750 there’s an all-new tank medallion, and a two-tone paint option to compliment the silver engine fins and wheel pinstripe. Your fun starts when the light turns green.

Urban Mobility
Harley-Davidson Street 750
If you wanna play in the street, Harley-Davidson has your bike

We were all warned as kids about playing in the street. While some of us paid attention to our parents there were others that well….If you’re the sort who never listened to a word of it, Harley-Davidson has got your motorcycle. The street is where the action is. Every inch of the motorcycle has been thought through to meet the demands of navigating the urban landscape. With a narrow and nimble profile that has a tight 60.4-inch wheelbase, handling is razor sharp.

Harley-Davidson Street 750
Quick moves and turns come easy

Quick moves and turns come easy when you’re threading through whatever modern civilization decides to throw in your path. You have liquid cooling, loads of power in the Revolution X™ engine. For when you need to be somewhere else in a hurry. We’re talking about a whole different kind of two-wheeled animal here. One born to take on the traffic-snarled urban jungle.

Authentic H-D
Street 750
the Street® series is built to be affordable machines for those who’ve gotta work to put gas in the tank

The Harley-Davidson Street® series is built to be affordable for those who’ve gotta work to put gas in the tank and pay the meter maid when you find a place to park. H-D did it their own way. Which means they did it right. The beautifully formed teardrop fuel tank is Milwaukee steel, just like the fenders. They painstakingly finished it with one of their premium paint jobs and topped it with a 3-D chrome badge. And most noteworthy it is not a decal.

Fire up the engine and you hear the pure signature rumble of a Harley-Davidson V-Twin
Fire up the engine and you hear the pure signature rumble of a Harley-Davidson V-Twin

Fire up the engine and you hear the pure signature rumble of a Harley-Davidson V-Twin, tuned to perfection in their state-of-the-art sound facility in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin USA. In other words, from the rock-solid belt final drive all the way forward to the Café-racer speed screen derived from deep in their factory custom heritage. There is no mistaking what the bikes in their newest family are. 100% pure Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Custom Soul
Harley-Davidson Street 750
The newest line of bikes from the no-nonsense blacked-out wheels up to be the ultimate blank canvas for customizing.

Get yourself to a part of town where interesting things are happening. You’ll see some rad custom bikes loaded with dark, aggressive style. More than likely they started life as a Harley-Davidson Street® model. The newest line of bikes was built from the no-nonsense blacked-out wheels up to be the ultimate blank canvas for customizing. Of course, each one is also first and foremost a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. So, even fresh off the line it’s a lean, mean and eye-popping machine.

Harley-Davidson Street 750
With a narrow and nimble profile that has a tight 60.4-inch wheelbase, handling is razor sharp.

Every inch of the up-swept two-into-one exhaust is black. This is the first time they have done that since the ‘70s when it was a signature part of the famous XLCR Café Racer. You also see a shout-out to renegade ‘70s street bike culture in the minimalist speed screen adorning the blacked out front end. As a result, you’ve got a machine loaded with Dark Custom™ attitude.

So, if you are looking for a new lean mean street machine, make the 2017 Harley-Davidson Street® 750 your next bike. Also, make it one of a kind by Customizing your new bike, and make it your own with many different options.
