Independence Day isn’t just a movie, and a good sci-fi thriller it was, it’s a national holiday celebrating what? It celebrates the Declaration of Independence, adopted on July 4, 1776. The Thirteen Colonies of America declared themselves to be states and no longer part of the British Empire, though the revolutionary war continued for some time after.
