Preparing for That Awesome Spring Motorcycle Ride That Is Rounding the Corner

AMERiders are here to help you in Preparing for That Awesome Spring Motorcycle Ride that Is quickly Rounding the Corner and gaining on us. For some of you that may have already happened, as you may live in a warmer climate such as Florida like our Website manager does. As Spring rounds the corner it means one thing for bikers: time to hit the road with wheels burning! First things first before you take that first Spring Motorcycle Ride make sure your gear is ready. Don’t worry getting your gear ready for spring is not as difficult as you may think, however, it does take a bit of checking and searching. Then you will be out in the wind having fun. Here are a few tips that AMERiders thinks will help get you ready.

Check your helmet!

If your (lid, brain bucket, or whatever you call your helmet) is older than 5 years, replacing it is something you might want to consider doing. The Snell Foundation and most of the helmet manufacturers will tell you that glues, resins and other materials that are used in manufacturing a helmet can break down over time. Things like hair oils, body fluids, and cosmetics, as well as normal “wear and tear” can all be contributors to this breakdown. Plus, every five years there are great advances in materials, designs, production methods and the standards that go into making and manufacturing helmets.

You may have heard some of your brothers and sisters say….”I heard that if a helmet hits the ground, it should be replaced.” This old biker’s tale isn’t necessarily true, but it isn’t really false either and it can get expensive. If you dropped your helmet on the garage floor don’t break out your wallet yet. You don’t necessarily need to replace it. Look at the manufacturer’s specs. If it says to replace it, follow instructions.

However, a common practice with today’s helmet technology is that if it’s not visibly cracked after it’s been dropped, then you don’t need to replace it. The problem with that is that is that you can’t see what is on the inside. The best thing to do is to go to your nearest dealership that you trust and have them inspect it. What we mean by you trust, is that you trust to check it and not say oh you need a new one just cause they want the money to sell you a new one.

Gloves – the unsung hero of apparel.

Your hands are just as important as you are, you know this as of you don’t have your hands you can’t ride the bike. Gloves are so much more than “something bikers wear to look the part.” In spring, finding the right motorcycle gloves to start your season are important. The type of glove is important whether Summer or winter gloves will depend on how chilly your Spring actually is in your area of the world.

When Spring rolls around and the temp goes up, it may be time to consider summer gloves. And therein lies a different choice. Do you go fingerless gloves or Kevlar-filled safety gloves? Riding can be a challenge in blistering heat, under the hot melting sun. Wearing gloves during warm-weather riding is important for hand protection, and to keep cool and comfortable, choose the right gloves for the season.

Riding Pants or Chaps

The battle lines are drawn. More often than not Americans will don chaps, however, European and Japanese motorcycle fans seem to wear full riding pants. Is that the only difference? If you throw your leg over a Triumph cafe bike, do you have to only wear leather riding pants? Or if you’re on a Road King, is your only option chaps?

No, course it isn’t it’s your bike it is your choice in what you wear on your legs. When Spring hits, it may be a bit chilly so you’ll naturally have gear. But as the weather warms, you might be inclined to shed the layers. There’s no law against not wearing chaps or pants, but keeping safety and of course comfort in mind. Chaps and riding pants are definitely a safety choice when it comes to riding.

What about the Bike

You can’t forget your bike either is it geared up and ready to go for short or long rides? Some of us like to take those short rides but still, they may be longer than our usual run around town so we need to make sure that our Bike is geared up as well. Things like sissy bar bags, windshield bags, toolbar bags, and saddlebags are important things to help us get ready to ride.

Don’t forget though those long hauls we like to make which call for motorcycle luggage or if your just riding around town don’t forget you can use a backpack as well.

Last but certainly not least

Boots! Your feet are what help you hold the bike up. They need to have good soles and great tread and needs to at least be waterproof as well as come up over your ankles in case the bike does go over they help to keep your ankles from being totally crushed.

The Bottom Line

As spring blossoms, your gear will help keep you warm and safe. Be sure to prepare for changing climates as well as finding your personal style. 9th Day of Christmas, 12 Days of Christmas Origin & Meaning Continued.

On the 9th Day of Christmas, AMERiders brings to you the 12 Days of Christmas and its Origin & Meaning Continued. We continue today with the 9th verse in the song. But before we do we want to thank everyone that shopped with us during our Winter Holiday Event. If you missed out you can still get great gifts from us, and we will do expedited shipping. To remind you the idea for these posts came to us because the boss loves the song and just loves to drive us nuts singing it. Yes, we’ve done the research and we know this starts on the 25th of December, but however you know that we at AMERIders are not normal so we are going to start this the 12 days before Christmas. We apologize if what follows offends anyone it is not our intention just information that we found online.

Recap of Origin

In England, between 1558 and 1829, it was not legal for Catholics to practice their kind of Christianity in public or private. Being a Catholic was treated as a bad crime. If you even owned a Catholic Bible, you could be put in prison! Catholics were stopped from worshipping because King Henry VIII fell out with the Catholic Church and started his own ‘Protestant’ Church (what is now the Church of England). There were many people who were still Catholics and they worshiped in secret.

‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ was written in England at the beginning of this time. Some people think that it was written to help children learn about their Catholic religion. In the carol, the days are supposed to represent special symbols and have hidden meanings, because it was illegal to have anything in writing that would indicate that you were a Catholic.

But there’s NO evidence that this is true and it seems most likely just to be a folk song and that the special ‘Catholic’ meanings were added at a MUCH later date!

Variations of the lyrics

The earliest known version of the lyrics was published under the title “The Twelve Days of Christmas sung at King Pepin’s Ball”, as part of a 1780 children’s book, Mirth without Mischief. Subsequent versions have shown considerable variation:

-In the earliest versions, the word “On” is not present at the beginning of each verse—for example, the first verse begins simply “The first day of Christmas”. “On” was added in Austin’s 1909 version, and became very popular thereafter.

-In the early versions, “my true love sent” me the gifts. However, a 20th-century variant has “my true love gave to me”; this wording has become particularly common in North America.

-The 1780 version has “four colly birds”—”colly” being a regional English expression for “black”. This wording must have been opaque to many even in the 19th century: “canary birds”, “colored birds”, “curly birds”, and “Corley birds” are found in its place. Frederic Austin’s 1909 version, which introduced the now-standard melody, also altered the fourth day’s gift to four “calling” birds, and this variant has become the most popular, although “colly” is still found.

-The “five gold rings” may become “five golden rings”, especially in North America. In the standard melody, this change enables singers to fit one syllable per musical note.

-The gifts associated with the final four days are often reordered. For example, the Pipers may be on the ninth day rather than the eleventh.

Song verse explanation.

Also, all the symbols can be used by Protestants and other Christians, not just by Catholics! There was another song called ‘A New Dial’ (also called ‘In Those Twelve Days’), which goes back as far as at least 1625, which gave religious meanings to the 12 Days of Christmas, but NOT so people could practice their faith is secret. On The 9th Day of Christmas, my true love gave to me ‘nine ladies dancing’ are the nine muses from Greek Mythology. (The ladies dancing could also mean fruits of the Holy Spirit.)

Other information.

The 12 Days of Christmas are now most famous as a song about someone receiving lots of presents from their ‘true love’. However, to get to the song there had to be the days to start with!

The 12 Days of Christmas start on Christmas Day and last until the evening of the 5th January – also known as Twelfth Night. The 12 Days have been celebrated in Europe since before the middle ages and were a time of celebration.

Each of the 12 Days traditionally is celebrated with a feast day for a saint and/or have different celebrations: Day 9 (2nd January): St. Basil the Great and St. Gregory Nazianzen, two important 4th century Christians.

A funny October Biker Story:

If you missed the post on October 5th, we posted a funny yet spooky story with it. We didn’t want you to miss it so we are reposting it today.

One of our family members tells this tale about an October evening when he was riding with a full face mask on.

“I was riding home on my bike one evening and it was really dark and starting to get a bit foggy. Yeah, I know October and foggy a good combination right, well not with a motorcycle. However, I am riding along home and trying to pay attention to the road when this big rig rides up behind me and gets on my rear. Not one to like that, I slow down that I guess irritated the driver so he started to go around.

Now, I should tell you before the next part that the I am wearing a full face mask that glows in the dark and looks like a mean skull. Now that you know that I’ll tell you what happened next. He gets up next to me I can only assume he was fixing to flip me off, but when he sees my face mask he freaks out and puts on his breaks, I can only assume to get away from me. I laughed all the way home, from then on I have always worn that mask at night as it has helped me with many a driver.”

Smart Tips for Handling the Road on Your Motorcycle in Cooler Weather!

We at AMERiders know that Fall and Winter will not always stop a motorcycle rider from riding. So, we scrounged around and found you some Tips for Handling the Road on Your Motorcycle in Cooler Weather! When riders think of going out for a ride, we sometimes imagine it to be an enjoyable ride through our favorite scenic area during pleasant weather. However, that’s not always the case. Mother nature is unpredictable, meaning riding conditions can change from one moment to the next. We as riders must adapt to these unpredictable conditions, as they can affect the road or impact our ability to safely operate our rides. Fall and winter each provide unique challenges for motorcycle riders.

Fall Riding

Cooler Weather — Motorcyclist On A Winding Road In Autumn

Crisper air and falling leaves are all sure signs that summer winding down and fall is here. However, before you worry about that snow and ice, you might need to prepare for wet roads and slippery leaves littering your favorite stretch of road. Those of us that ride have probably gotten caught in the rain now and then. Keep waterproof (or water-resistant) rain gear in a backpack or saddlebags. Also, visibility can become impaired by rain, so make sure to pack an extra pair or glasses or goggles, just in case.

As leaves turn from green to yellow, orange, red and brown, they often fall to the ground, sometimes hiding the surface of the road from our eyes. Ride over and through leaves with caution, as they can cover potholes in the road that could affect your control of your bike. Also, wet leaves could be slick and affect a bike’s traction making it difficult to stop quickly. Reducing your speed and maintain a constant state of awareness to maximize your safety on the road when riding in these conditions and cooler weather.

Winter Riding

Even the most avid motorcycle riders will consider putting their bike away during the coldest months. The Wind, snow, ice, and frigid temperatures generally don’t make for great or even fun motorcycle riding conditions for some but there are those of us that just ride because it is our “Wind Therapy” and helps us get away from it all. Before you hit the road check some of these tips for riding in cooler weather.

Penny Test

Before you hit that frozen road, it is important to check your tires. First, check the tread on your tires by doing the same “penny test” you might do on your car’s tires. Take a Lincoln penny; hold it between your thumb and forefinger so that the head is showing. Place the top of Lincoln’s head into one of the grooves of the tire’s tread. If any part of Lincoln’s head is obscured by the tread, you have a safe amount of tread. If you can see above Lincoln’s head, then you need a new tire.

Replacing after 6 years

If your tires are six years or older, consider replacing them. Checking the age of your tires is easy, look for the four-digit code near the Department of Transportation (DOT) markings. The first two numbers in the sequence represent the week they were manufactured. While the last two digits represent the year. It is also very important to check your tire pressure, for the main reason that for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit that the temperature drops, your tires can lose 1-2 pounds per square inch of pressure.

Staying warm on a ride.

Keeping your body warm and protected can require some serious gear, so plan ahead. Depending on the temperature, consider thermal underwear, glove liners, balaclavas and other base layers. Hypothermia due to severe wind chill can be a concern, especially riding a motorcycle. When the temperature is 32 degrees Fahrenheit, traveling at 60 miles per hour can result in a wind chill of approximately 0 degrees Fahrenheit. To help warm your extremities, which are generally most susceptible to cold temperatures, consider using chemical heat packs on gloves and boots, or even outfit your bike with grip, seat and foot warmers.

Leather and Textile apparel, like the jacket to the left not only are good for fall and winter riding but spring and summer, as well as you, can open up the vents on them to allow for cooler air to flow through. Regardless of the season, through proper preparation and the use of the right equipment and gear, you can safely enjoy your motorcycle year-round.

PVC vs Leather: Which is one gives better protection while riding?

AMERiders knows that there is a growing question of PVC vs Leather and which is one gives better protection while riding? We will try to help figure that out so that you can make an informed decision for your next gear purchase. We have already covered Leather vs Textile a few posts back so it is only right to extend on that with explaining what PVC is and comparing it to leather.

There is a huge difference in cost and the physical properties of genuine leather and faux leather. It is imperative to know what you are getting, and not getting. It is also important to know which will protect you better

What is PVC Leather exactly?

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) leather is a type of faux leather that is made by covering a base of natural or synthetic material with vinyl, made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and plasticizers. It has no hair follicles (pores) which make it virtually waterproof, but may become unbreathable in hot temperatures. In some rain suit and waterproof garment descriptions, you will notice the acronym PVC. This is a rubberized coating that is laminated to the nylon to make it waterproof. There are many pieces of motorcycle gear made from PVC material not just apparel, saddlebags, tool bags, and other gear for the bike as well.

Leather in comparison to PVC

Leather, however, is more abrasion resistant than PVC, and resists tearing. Oe of the drawbacks to leather is that in order to provide proper abrasion protection, it can be heavy, especially if made from cowhide. Another drawback is wearing leather while riding in tropical or semi-tropical conditions is that it can become very hot, especially in urban traffic.

Alternatives to both Leather and PVC

An alternative to this would be a mesh or textile jacket that includes proper protective inserts or foam pads at the elbows, shoulders, and back. Most Mesh jackets also have the advantage of being light and washable. It is best to find a textile jacket that has a combination of many different types of textile. This helps to ensure that it gives overall protection not sure on what they are, check out our article here for some. A good example would be a jacket with an outer shell of at least 500-denier Cordura, with 20% or less polyurethane coating, a Gore-Tex or Aero-Tex membrane, a taffeta lining, and CE-approved armor, and a little PVC thrown in for waterproof.

Weird Things That Are Lost or Left Behind at the Annual Sturgis Rally

There are many weird things that are lost or left behind at the Annual Sturgis Rally each year, either intentionally or by accident if you are one of these people AMERiders can help you replace these some of these items. You may be thinking that it just may be small things like bandannas, lighters, and maybe a jacket or other items that get lost or left at Sturgis, well that is just not true. Each August for the past 74 years, save for a couple during World War II, bikers from around the globe have motored to the mecca of motorcycling – the Sturgis motorcycle rally in the Black Hills.

These rally goers tour the scenic highways, stop at Mount Rushmore National Memorial, cruise past the free-roaming herds of bison in Custer State Park, and speed by the towering waterfalls of Spearfish Canyon. At night, rally-goers test the taps at many a Sturgis saloon and sway to the tunes of top-name musical acts at several entertainment venues, and leave a trail of items in their wake. The Buffalo Chip Saloon even has posted some of the weirdest things that have been left behind. Here are just a few items of what they have listed before.

Weird and Wonderful things left behind at Sturgis

Some of these things are typical things you would find left behind after a rally others well you have to wonder what the heck were they thinking? Maybe I just don’t want to pack it up, or I’ll buy a new one when I get home.

These the Chip also had pictures of, and we thought it would be fun to post them here for reference as to the weird things that can get left.

Tons of keys — now you would think that if you just drove your motorcycle to the rally all you would have is your bike keys. How do you start your bike without its keys, or the car or motorhome for that matter?

A bottle of STURGIZZ?? — Ok, we don’t know what this is and the Chip didn’t elaborate either. However, if you are gonna name it, don’t leave it behind lol. On the other hand, We had ideas on what it might be but we will leave that to your imagination.

Apartment furniture — We guess that Sturgis is as good a place as any to build your home. However, what we would like to know is where are the 4 walls, floor, and ceiling? Not to mention the plumbing and lighting that you would need as well. If it is to be an outdoor apartment still there are items missing you might need.
