PVC vs Leather: Which is one gives better protection while riding?

AMERiders knows that there is a growing question of PVC vs Leather and which is one gives better protection while riding? We will try to help figure that out so that you can make an informed decision for your next gear purchase. We have already covered Leather vs Textile a few posts back so it is only right to extend on that with explaining what PVC is and comparing it to leather.

There is a huge difference in cost and the physical properties of genuine leather and faux leather. It is imperative to know what you are getting, and not getting. It is also important to know which will protect you better

What is PVC Leather exactly?

PVC vs Leather — PVC Motorcycle Saddlebag With Studs

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) leather is a type of faux leather that is made by covering a base of natural or synthetic material with vinyl, made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and plasticizers. It has no hair follicles (pores) which make it virtually waterproof, but may become unbreathable in hot temperatures. In some rain suit and waterproof garment descriptions, you will notice the acronym PVC. This is a rubberized coating that is laminated to the nylon to make it waterproof. There are many pieces of motorcycle gear made from PVC material not just apparel, saddlebags, tool bags, and other gear for the bike as well.

Leather in comparison to PVC

Leather, however, is more abrasion resistant than PVC, and resists tearing. Oe of the drawbacks to leather is that in order to provide proper abrasion protection, it can be heavy, especially if made from cowhide. Another drawback is wearing leather while riding in tropical or semi-tropical conditions is that it can become very hot, especially in urban traffic.

Alternatives to both Leather and PVC

An alternative to this would be a mesh or textile jacket that includes proper protective inserts or foam pads at the elbows, shoulders, and back. Most Mesh jackets also have the advantage of being light and washable. It is best to find a textile jacket that has a combination of many different types of textile. This helps to ensure that it gives overall protection not sure on what they are, check out our article here for some. A good example would be a jacket with an outer shell of at least 500-denier Cordura, with 20% or less polyurethane coating, a Gore-Tex or Aero-Tex membrane, a taffeta lining, and CE-approved armor, and a little PVC thrown in for waterproof.

5 Motorcycle Accessory Must Haves When Riding!

Have you been told that you need this or you must have that Motorcycle Accessory for your bike? It happens to all of us at one point or another after starting out to ride and even after riding for many years and meeting new people, we have all heard that line many times. But, what are 5 Motorcycle Accessory Must Haves When Riding your bike? We at AMERiders will give you 5 of our favorites to have.

Ladies, most of you will agree with me when I say it is hard to get our men to ask for directions, guys we love you but it’s true you would get lost and still not want to ask for directions heck some of us ladies are just as guilty of this as well. So our first one is a GPS/Cell Phone holder this Adjustable, Waterproof GPS/Smartphone Mount is what you need to keep you on track no matter where you are headed. It has great features including a sun visor and interior cushion that will fit larger Smartphone’s; water-resistant bag; and handle bracket mount with a rubber-covered clamp. Our next favorite Motorcycle Accessory to carry along is a tool bag, as you never know when you are going to have something break on your bike or see one of our brothers or sisters broke down on the side of the road and needing a hand. Believe it or not, most bikers don’t think about dehydration being a problem when riding, we just get thirsty, however, it is very important. Dehydration can cause headaches, disorientation, heat stroke, muscle cramps which can suck when the throttle is wide open, loss of concentration, drowsiness and nausea which is bad for the guy or gal behind you, all of which can cause crashes.

So stay hydrated all is needed is a bottle of water attached to your bike with a cup holder like this one when you stop at a red light or feel a bit thirsty pull over and take a swig it only takes a second or two.

Motorcycle Road-Trip Planning What to Pack for Your Active Trip!

Traveling season is coming up and whether it is hopping in the car and heading out or hopping on the bike and letting the wind blow through your hair there is always one thing on everyone’s mind What to pack when planning a road trip. A Motorcycle Road-trip is so much different that traveling in a car because there is not as much room to pack you not only have to pack light and versatile as well. We want to give you the basics in packing for your trip so you can have fun and not worry about whether you left anything behind that you may need or not.

First of all, Whether you’re going to Daytona for Bike week or just heading across the USA for a site seeing tour it’s still going to be the same except probably for the amount of clothes you take with you, and where you plan on sleeping (camping or hotel). You don’t want to take the couch, that would just look silly and might get you pulled over!

A Motorcycle Road-trip can be difficult to pack for so, what do you take when you are on a road-trip for a bike? Most everything can be taken that can be packed. Electronics, clothes, toiletries, books, however, you want to be practical. What how long do you want to be packing and unpacking during the day, and how much do you really want to carry? The other thing is that the more you carry the more gas the bike is going to use as well so, less is actually more in this case.

Take only what you really need such as:

This is the main givens ID, cash, insurance & roadside assistance info, motorcycle key, maps / directions
electronics phone /camera/ charger,
riding protective gear such as helmet, gloves, jacket, riding boots, goggles, rain gear, rain /night goggles, sunglasses and any other protective gear you feel you need including earplugs.
Your clothing pack light ensure that it is the most compressible clothing you have. remember that socks can be work more than one day. But don’t pack heavy clothing other than your protective gear unless you absolutely have too.Polyester is your friend on the road!
Headwear ie ponytail holders, doo-rags or skull caps if needed. these keep your head warm.
Tools in the tool bag (adjustable wrench, alan wrenches, screwdriver (to remove the seat), air pump, and other motorcycle tools that are needed for the road)
Toiletries (hotels have shampoo & soap unless you need special shampoo) – toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, comb/brush, lotion for dry skin, chapstick for dry lips, kleenex travel pack (or just tuck a couple of them somewhere on the bike)
Ladies you don’t really need make-up if so pack very lightly remember things can break and make a mess. Mascara and eyeliner work great on a trip and can be smudged just right for a great look for pictures.
Prescription meds – anything you regularly take, as well as a couple of ibuprofen and cold tablets just in case
Extra bags – Ziploc bags, plastic shopping bags & 1 larger garbage bag you never know what you will need them for.
